Cristina Kirchner calls for Britain to negotiate status of the Falkland Islands
World
Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner has called for Britain to negotiate the status of the Falkland Islands during her annual state of the nation speech to Congress.
The leader pointed out that she would not renounce her diplomatic fight for the Malvinas – the Spanish name for the Falklands – and accused the UK of negotiating with “genocidists,” a military junta that took the reins of power in the 1982 invasion of the islands, killing approximately 30,000 opposition activists.
Kirchner’s move came ahead of a referendum on the Falklands status next Sunday, with the islanders expected to be in favor of maintaining their status as a British Overseas Territory.
