Armenia's only shelter for homeless people in the Haghtanak village is crowded this winter.
At her meeting with journalists, the writer and columnist Lusine Vayachyan said that Armenia's Ministry of Labor and Social Security is not concerned over the problem. "Tender-hearted people are homeless people's only hope. What is this agency doing when old people are outside?" she asked.
The former deputy minister of labor and social security, Board member, Heritage party, Karine Hakobyan shared Ms. Vayachyan's opinion that officials of Armenian Ministry of Labor and Social Security are not held responsible for the situation.
"The number of homeless people is increasing. The social situation in Armenia is stimulating this process. The government is supposed to resolve social problems," Hakobyan said. The problem will be resolved only after the government develops and launches a relevant program, she added.
"This small state must not have homeless people. They, first of all, need psychological aid and minimum pays. The government is obliged to provide housing for the population," she said.
The speakers also expressed their concern over the middle class's social situation. They believe middle class representatives may "join the homeless people's ranks" at any moment.
