Samvel Nikyan was elected Speaker of the Armenian Parliament today, on Dec. 6.
The parliamentary opposition Heritage Party proposed its own nominee, too, as Party leader Raffi Hovannisian nominated Heritage MP Larisa Alaverdyan to this post.
A special session may be convened during which Deputy Speaker will be elected.
To note, during its December 1 session, ruling Republican Party’s board decided to nominate Samvel Nikoyan as the new NA Speaker, and Eduard Sharmazanov, as Deputy Speaker.
And Gagik Melikyan will replace Sharmazanov as RPA Parliamentary Faction Secretary.
Samvel Nikoyan was born on February 13, 1958 in Sarnaghbur village, Ani district. Graduated from Yerevan Polytechnic Institute, as a mechanics engineer. In 1982, worked at Hydro Machinery Plant, as an engineer, designer, chief of department, chief of workshop. In 1995-1998, worked at RA Chamber of commerce and trade, as chief of department. In 1998-2003, worked as the director at Armenian Press jsc.
On May 25, 2003 he was elected to the NA from the proportional party ticket of the RPA. Member of standing NA commission for foreign affairs. He is a member of ad-hoc committee on determining the effectiveness of the use of loans, credits, grants and humanitarian aid received from foreign governments and International organizations. He is a member of the Republican Party of Armenia Faction.
Since 27 July 1995, he has been a member of the Republican Party of Armenia.
On 9 June, 2001(6-th congress of RPA), on 12 July, 2003 (8-th congress of RPA), on 17 December, 2005 (9-th congress of RPA) was elected a member of RPA board.
1995-2002 was elected the chairman of Kanaker-Dzeytun territorial organization board of RPA.
2002-2004 was the chairman of oraganizational committee of RPA.
He is married, has three children.
