Venezuelans mourn Hugo Chavez
World
A seven-day national mourning has been declared in Venezuela for the late President Hugo Chavez. State flags are flying at half-mast, TV and radio channels have put off the air all entertainment programmes.
Crowds have gathered at production and other facilities to hold rallies. Hundreds have come to the Caracas military hospital where Chavez was treated for his illness in recent days.
They are chanting slogans and sing revolutionary songs. Leading politicians are urging national unity and calm.
The Command of Venezuela’s Armed Forces was shown live when swearing allegiance to Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who is now acting president.
The funeral of Chavez, who has for two years fought his cancerous disease, is due on Friday, TASS reports.
