Schengen entry postponed for Bulgaria, Romania
World
Ministers of Interior and Justice of the European Union, meeting in Brussels, have agreed to defer until the end of 2013 a decision on accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen zone.
Interior Ministers of Germany and Finland previously announced they would not support these countries’ entry bid, because at this stage it would be premature, due to rampant corruption there.
Thus, German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said in Brussels on Thursday that Bulgaria and Romania do not meet the criteria to join the 26-member, visa-free Schengen zone.
“There are some areas of weakness, such as in the functionality of the judicial system, that prevents us from saying: abolish the borders,” said Friedrich. He warned Germany might witness an influx of untrustworthy people, migrating there “without further control”, RIA reports.
