Armenian young people in Latin America no longer speak their native tongue and get assimilated to other ethnic groups, musician Ara Gevorgyan, who recently visited the Armenian culture colonies in South America, has told reporters.
"It’s very regrettable that the Armenian community in San Paolo wishes to sell the school because there's no one to attend it. I talked them out of doing that, but the problem persists," he said at a news conference on Thursday.
Addressing the problem, singers ArmineNahapetyan and ZaruhiBabayan especially focused on the situation of the Armenian language in Latin American schools.
"They do not know Armenian well. It is not properly taught at schools - that's what the local community members say. The question has been overlooked both by them and us. A lot will change if we are a little bit more active," Babayan said.
Armen Hayrapetyan, a deputy minister of diaspora also attending the news conference, promised to invite many children from Latin America next year.
