Obama: "Iran more than a year away from nuclear weapon."
Iran
US President Barack Obama said Iran is still more than a year away from building a nuclear weapon while indicating the U.S. is ready to act militarily if sanctions don’t force the Iranians to stop development.
Obama, in an interview with Israel’s Channel 2 Television ahead of his first trip to Israel as president, said diplomatic efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions could result in a “more lasting solution.”
When he visits Israel next week, Obama said he’ll reiterate to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he’s keeping open the option of using force.
“When I say that all options are on the table, all options are on the table,” Obama said. “The United States obviously has significant capabilities.”
The U.S. and its negotiating partners - France, the U.K., Russia, China and Germany - have presented a new offer to Iran at international talks on the Islamic republic’s nuclear program. Netanyahu has accused Iran of using negotiations to buy time as it builds up a weapons program.
