The French National Assembly has started its scheduled debate over the bill criminalizing the denial of the Armenian Genocide.
The draft, authored by lawmaker Valeria Boyer, was recently approved by the Assembly's Committee of Laws.
Under the bill, anyone in France publicly denying the Armenian Genocide will face one year in prison and a fine of €45,000.
A similar legal act passed by the National Assembly on October 16, 2006 never received the Senate's approval. In May, 2011, the upper chamber of the French parliament rejected the proposal by a vote of 74 in favor and 196 against.
The local TV channel Yerkir Media provides a live coverage of the debate.
