The UN Eastern European Group has confirmed RA Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Karen Nazaryan's nomination to head the Special Committee on the UN Charter in 2012.
The Special Committee is called for discussing the proposals aimed at improving the capacities and the level of efficiency for implementing the organization's goals and activities.
This Committee discusses issues that are related to the role of the UN and international organizations in maintaining and ensuring peace and security in the world, the application of provisions in the UN Charter to support third countries that suffer from the application of sanctions according to Chapter 7 of the UN Charter and the peaceful regulation of disputes between states.
In the past, the efforts of the Special Committee have led to negotiations over important documents such as the General Assembly's Resolutions on Peaceful Regulation of International Disputes, the Prevention and Elimination of Disputes and Situations, the declarations on cooperation between the UN and regional structures in which great importance is attached to the unconditional implementation of the right of nations to self-determination, the regulation of disputes through peace, the inadmissibility and the exclusion of the application of force and the need for efforts of regional organizations in relation to that.
Unlike other UN bodies, the Special Committee on the UN Charter takes decisions through consensus, reports the MFA press service.
