Antarctic ice melting 10 times faster
World
The melting of Antarctica is now occurring about 10 times faster than 600 years ago. This conclusion was reached by British and Australian scientists who drilled a hole to a depth of 364 meters into the permafrost on James Ross Island, near the northernmost point of the continent.
Followed by chemical analysis of samples taken from the great depth and on the surface, scientists have determined that the average temperature has risen by 1.8 degrees Celsius since 600 years ago.
As a result of the study it was learned that six hundred years ago only about 0.5% of the snow which fell on the island melted but at the end of the last century 5%.
