Paris St-Germain's hopes dashed as Wayne Rooney hints that we wants to pledge his future to Manchester United
Sport
Despite ongoing speculation linking the 27-year-old with a move to Paris St-Germain at the end of the season, it is understood that Rooney has no desire to leave Manchester United and that he continues to see his future with the Premier League leaders.
Claims in France on Sunday evening by Michel Moulin, PSG’s sporting adviser for a month in 2008, that Rooney leaving United for the French club was a ‘done deal’ were dismissed out of hand by sources close to the player.
Whether United would be prepared to match or increase Rooney’s salary is open to question. They could follow the blueprint adopted by Manchester City when renegotiating Yaya Toure’s £200,000-a-week contract recently, with the Ivorian accepting a lower basic salary, but more lucrative incentives, to commit to a deal worth up to £240,000 a week.
The appointment of Ed Woodward as United’s chief executive in place of David Gill, who is standing down to pursue a role representing the Football Association within Uefa, may also be a key factor in the timing, and eventual outcome, of negotiations with Rooney.
However, Rooney’s desire to commit to a new deal is clear and he has already indicated to the club his preference to stay, The Telegraph reports.
