Argentineans march to protest deteriorating economy
World
An estimated 1 million Argentineans marched on Thursday in one of the biggest anti-government protests over the past few years, as anger spilled into the streets over a deteriorating economy and President Cristina Fernandez's efforts to reform the media and courts.
The demonstration in the capital, Buenos Aires, was a peaceful one. Many were banging pots and pans in a traditional Latin American form of protest. There were also slogans such as "Argentina, wake up!" and "Corrupt Cristina," with the historic Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires a focal point for the protests.
Several prominent opposition politicians joined the march. Other, smaller marches occurred in cities and towns throughout the country.
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner herself is outside the country, having flown to Peru, for a meeting of Heads of State of the Union of South American Nations (Unasur).
