General elections in Iceland
World
General elections are due in Iceland this Saturday to the world’s oldest parliament, which first met in the year 930, according to the BBC.
The elections involve 15 political parties and are expected to force out the ruling left-of-centre coalition.
The Social Democrats assumed the leadership of the nation more than four years ago following an economic crash as a result of a collapse of the national banking system.
According to sociological surveys, the frontrunners of the election race are the two parties that formed part of the pre-crisis Cabinet.
Both of these parties are opposed to Iceland’s joining the European Union.
