A court in Tunis has convicted, in absentia, Tunisia's ex-president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to life in prison for voluntary homicide in a third such sentence since he was overthrown in January 2011.
Ben Ali has been living in exile in Saudi Arabia, where he fled amid an uprising that toppled him after 23 years in power.
According to local media reports, Ben Ali was tried for the death of a demonstrator and injuries to two others during a crackdown on protesters in the southern city of Sfax.
The ex-interior minister Rafik Belhaj Kacem, who was present, was sentenced to a 10-year prison term in the case.
Ben Ali was sentenced to similar life terms last June and July for crackdowns in the capital Tunis and in the country’s northwest.
