Around 300 environmental activists set out on a trip to Teghut forest in Tavush region of Armenia earlier this morning.
Film director Tigran Khzmalyan and a member of the opposition Heritage party faction in parliament, Zaruhi Postanjyan, also joined the group.
The environmental activists held a protest outside the office of Valex Group, a copper company expected to operate a mine on the territory.
They called for documented evidence proving the lawfulness of such plan. The activists also asked the Government to respect its commitment under the Aarhus Convention and revise the decision on exploiting the mine.
"Respect the people’s opinion if you want to do business," one of the activists said through a microphone.
Local residents, protesting against the environmental campaign, also joined the crowd.
The group later left the territory after talking to several representatives of the company.
To note, the environmentalists started a trip to the forest on January 15 to introduce the problem to people and raise their awareness of the hazards that may arise from the exploitation of the mine in Teghut. The campaign brought together environmentalists who explained the negative impact of such decision.
