Levon Aronian, Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri won their games in the first round of the 74th Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, The Netherlands.

Carlsen grinded down Vugar Gashimov in an ending while Levon Aronian used a pawn sacrifice with Black to defeat Sergey Karjakin. Anish Giri was the last to finish in the A group, and won, also with the black pieces, in a double rook ending against Boris Gelfand.
