World Press Freedom Day is being marked organising different programmes across the country on Friday.

'Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media' has been set as the global theme of this year's World Press Freedom Day with a focus on safety of journalists, the issue of impunity and online safety.

The Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) staged a morning assembly on the occasion of the Press Freedom Day in Capital.

The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 as World Press Freedom Day in December 1993 following the recommendation of UNESCO's general conference. However the day is being marked in Nepal since 1997.

The day is used as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

A total of 228 anti-press incidents occurred in Nepal during this year (May 3, 2012 to May 2, 2013), stated a press release issued by FNJ Vice-chairperson Yashoda Timsina.
