PressTV - Heavy snowfall and avalanches have killed at least 16 people in Afghanistan with many more citizens missing and feared dead.
Afghan officials said on Monday that the massive snowfall plus shortages of equipment have made it almost impossible for rescue teams to reach the worst-affected areas in the province of Badakhshan, located in the northeast of the country.
They stated that landslides have cut off at least 12 districts from the provincial capital of Faizabad from the other parts of the country, adding, one single avalanche has buried 72 houses in one village in Badakhshan.
The governor of Badakhshan, Shah Waliullah Adeeb, says some areas of the province are covered with two to three meters of snow.
Another provincial official emphasized that people in areas worst affected by the snowfall are trapped and in dire need of food and medical supplies but roads are blocked and the provincial administration lacks snow clearing equipment such as bulldozers and other machinery.
