At 9 am today in the Armenia Marriott Hotel, John Prescott, one of two co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) for the monitoring of Armenia, met with family members of the victims of the tragic events of Mar. 1–2, 2008, in Yerevan.
After the meeting the parents of the victims of March 1 were left much disappointed. Prescott mainly left all of the parents' questions unanswered. The meeting with Prescott lasted 25 minutes, but the parents and their attorneys weren't able to express their concerns. The attorneys of the victims' successors were also discontent with the meeting with Prescott and didn't even comment on it. Attorney Artak Zeynalyan summed it up by saying that "Mr. Prescott was running out of time".
Tigran Khachatryan's mother, Alla Hovhannisyan was surprised by the behavior of the Armenian authorities and John Prescott. She added that this was simply a formal meeting with the them since the parents had told Prescott that they would organize a protest, if the meeting was not held.
"No murder has been revealed, the PACE is shutting its eyes on all this and Armenia is getting ready for new elections. After all this, what guarantee does the PACE have that the upcoming elections will be better than the previous ones and that there won't be victims?" Hovhannisyan said.
Sargis Qloyan, father of Mar. 1 victim Gor Qloyan, said that the meeting lasted 25 minutes, as Prescott was rushing to get to the RA General Prosecutor’s Office.
"He kept telling us he had no time and that he had to meet with the prosecutor general. He said he knew everything and that he shared our pain, but the parents left with a feeling of indignation," Sargis Kloyan added.
“Initially he said that he wants to know whether we’re familiar with the materials in the SIS [Armenia's Special Investigation Service] intermediate report. We said we found out about this report from the internet. He asked whether the materials for the report were compiled without us, and we said yes, they compiled them without us. He also found out from us that in these four years, we haven’t been familiar with the SIS’s written materials,” he said.
According to Qloyan, Prescott confessed that he personally wanted to hear from the parents about this and that meeting with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan and General Prosecutor Aghvan Hovsepyan today, he will ask them why the SIS compiled this report without the victims’ families.
“He said that he’s not an investigative body but he knows our pain well and he will raise this at his meetings today,” Sargis Qloyan said.
