The life-termers in Yerevan`s Nubarashen penitentiary postponed their hunger-strike yesterday, on Jan.17, according to the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Department.
Gor Ghlechyan, a spokesperson for the Department, said the convicts have postponed their plan to declare a hunger protest. They had appealed to president Serzh Sargsyan with the desire to meet with his representative to receive clarifications regarding the amendments to the RA Criminal Code.
The prisoners demand the revision of their cases by the order stipulated by the law and make the punishment match with the amendments to the RA Criminal Code so that they are imprisoned for 15-20 years.
Some prisoners of Erebuni Penitentiary have also appealed to Serzh Sargsyan with an open letter on conditional or premature release.
"Our rights related to conditional-premature release are frequently violated for no reason. We are always told that it is the president's decree. The commission on conditional-premature release holds sessions and denies us for no reason," as stated in the letter.
The letter has been disseminated by the public observer group in charge of public control of the Penitentiary of the RA Ministry of Justice.
