A Ukrainian court has dropped one criminal case against former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko, Kommersant reports, citing a statement from the Ukrainian Security Services.
The charge concerned the activities of United Energy Systems of Ukraine (UESU), which Timoshenko ran as CEO in the 1990’s. It was accused of concealing earnings in foreign currencies.
"Due to the fact that Article 207 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (80-1 in the 1960 version) was decriminalized, the charge of concealing foreign currency earnings against Timoshenko has been dropped," the statement said. The court will reportedly continue to pursue other corruption charges against Timoshenko.
On October 11, Timoshenko was found guilty of exceeding authority as prime minister in 2009 when she signed a gas trade agreement with Russia and was sentenced to seven years in prison. Several international organizations and leaders have denounced the trial as politically motivated.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) filed new charges against Timoshenko October 12, alleging she embezzled state funds, committed financial fraud and tax evasion to the tune of $405.5 million when she headed United Energy Systems of Ukraine more than 10 years earlier.
