First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Gela Khvedelidze arrested in connection with the spread of scandalous video, reflecting the privacy of defender Giorgi Paresashvili.
On Sunday evening press conference, Interior Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that that video was shot by the previous government, the Department of Constitutional Security to blackmail Paresashvili to make him work for them, but were not used.
"After the arrival of the new government, all of these materials have been sealed in accordance with the established rules. But there is no guarantee that the former authorities do not have copies. Preservation of these and other illegal materials was charged to my former deputy editor Gela Khvedelidze. For me, it is very unpleasant fact, however, my first deputy, unfortunately, has made not only a crime, but an act unworthy to Interior Ministry official, "the minister said.
He stressed that Khvedelidze inadequate and painfully took a completely unfounded and defamatory statement released in the media against him and decided to take revenge, self-distributed materials on Paresashvili. "He thought that since he was able to stop the smear campaign against him" - said Garibashvili.
The minister promised that the archive video footage with defaming the citizens will be immediately destroyed.
Khvedelidze, who was arrested on the second part of Article 157 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, confessed to the crime.
