Tax hearings in US Congress lead to scandal
USA
The first Congressional hearings on the breaches of tax regulations by the International Revenue Service ended in a scandal after it became clear that the I.R.S. targeted conservative groups through deliberately creating delays in processing their applications for tax exemption.
IRS head Steven Miller, who was summoned for the hearings on Friday, was sacked later in the day after confirming reports to this effect.
Congressman of Texas Kevin Brady says the matter smacks of rot.
Friday’s hearings, he said, provided no answers as to why conservative groups were discriminated against and why the leaking of confidential IRS documents occurred.
The recent hearings will entail a long and tedious litigation, Brady said.
At least three Congressional committees are set on investigating the tax scandal.
