Russian scientists develop way to improve estimation of cancer surgery effect

A computer program estimating the results of cancer surgery has been developed in Novosibirsk, hospital physician at the chair of neurosurgery of Novosibirsk State Medical University Gleb Sergeev told reporters Thursday.
The program can estimate the count of remaining cancer cells "in three mouse clicks" by separating them from brain tissue, blood coagulators and blood.
"Traditionally, the extent of surgical intervention was estimated by comparing MRI results before and after the operation," Sergeev said. "We asked specialists to make an estimation of the cancer cell count and their estimates had discrepancies of 10% to 40%."
About 80% of brain tumors develop from remaining cancer cells, Sergeev added.
