Turkey: Court frees 4 journalists accused in plot.
Turkey
An Istanbul court on Monday released four journalists from jail, where they had been awaiting trial on charges that they were part of a plot to overthrow the government. Human rights groups have accused Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government of repressing freedom of speech through a mixture of intimidation and arrests. Two of the journalists, the award-winning investigative reporters Nedim Sener and Ahmet Sik spent more than a year in prison after being accused of being part of an illegal terrorist group. Both men have denied the charges. According to the Journalists Union of Turkey, about 100 journalists are currently imprisoned. The government disputes that figure and insists that most of the jailed journalists were arrested for activities other than reporting.
