Singapore declares seven-day mourning over former leader Lee Kuan Yew’s death

Singapore declared a week-long mourning after the death of its first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew.
Lee, who had led the nation from 1959 to 1990, died overnight to Monday aged 91 in a Singapore hospital where he was hospitalized in February to treat pneumonia.

Under Lee, who fought corruption and promoted discipline, Singapore turned into a key financial center.
In November 2009, during the first official visit to Singapore by a Russian leader, Dmitry Medvedev, who was Russia’s president at the time, awarded Lee Kuan Yew an Order of Friendship.
