Interview with an American businessman and philanthropist Hovik Chamichyan.
My first question is: Who is the Hovik Chamichyan? Tell us a little about yourself, your family.
Let me first start out that I am from Yerevan, Armenia. I was born in 1980. I spent my childhood in the Zeytun district. My father's parents were survivors of the 1915 genocide. My ancestors were from the province of Western Armenia Zeytun. Because of the Armenian Genocide, they escaped, migrated and settled in Yerevan, Armenia. My Paternal grandfather, Hovannes Chamichyan, was a notable builder and actively participated in the building of many structures in the Zeytun District. My father told me that my grandfather had a habit of leaving his signature on structures that he built, which are still preserved until today. My father, Manvel Chamichyan is a well-known songwriter and musician. I, at such a young age remember some of our guests were famous musicians and songwriters from the past and present. My Mother was a housewife. I have a sister and brother who are adults and are accomplished individuals in their chosen areas of work.
When and how was it that your family moved to the United States?
It was the year of 1990. I was only 10 years old and did not affect me or my family in any way. My father moved to the United States for his professional career. He received an invite from his colleagues to come and continue his singing career in America, who at that time was in the restaurant business.
After moving to the United States what was some of the difficulties encountered in the initial difficulties of integrating aspect of American life? Tell us a little about it.
I would not say that there were difficulties in terms of integration, as a teenager I practiced kickboxing and in those year my I was stronger than my peers and all the students from my school from different ethnicities were always trying to be friend me. Even if there were any conflicts between my classmates, I was the one that would maintain the peace between them and would settle the issue for the benefit of our friendship.
After college, what is your profession?
After graduating from high school I enrolled at Los Angeles Academy of Private Investigations After four years of studying, I received a private investigator profession.
Mr. Chamichyan, when was the first that you founded your own business or company and what was in the business? Please tell us a little about it.
In 1997, we founded our family business "Hovik Manufacturing Company" - that was engaged in garment production and performance of world-famous brands, Avirex, BCBG, FUBU, Adidas, BEBE companies, small orders. However, 1999 new law was passed with strict restrictions in light industry operating companies, which is why many companies have closed or moved countries.
However what type of work did you develop? What have you achieved in all of your businesses?
From the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks the US government increased security measures and security policies I saw an opportunity and because of my profession I established a private instigation and security service. We then started providing security services to US leaders, and other various government officials and representatives visiting the United States. Other companies that we have provided service too consisted of Google, Yahoo, HGTV, and Pie Town Productions.
It's been two years since I founded Stone Eye Entertainment film studio, which steadily moving forward and has gained great popularity in Los Angeles.
As a businessmen, you have not left the public during these years and charitable activities: Talk a little bit about that.
Living in the US for many years, one way or another it becomes the country's culture.
Bearer of public service, philanthropy is an integral part of American culture. Being a student I was involved in various social structures always participating in public works, various activities and have been a volunteer and eventually it become a way of life.
Being a proud Freemason, my friends who also Freemasons and are established and successful in their fields, we would organizing various campaigns like bike tours and other initiatives. From the donations received we would donate all the money to the Shrines Hospital for Children where hundreds of children with disabilities are waiting for our attention and we were trying to make their lives as pleasurable as possible.
What of initiatives and plans do you have to help needy people residing in Armenia?
I would definitely say that there are many people who need assistance in Armenia.
It has been two years that we have been helping people in the city of Gyumri and Vanadzor regularly.
We are informed and notified by our friends who live Armenia. Those families live in very poor conditions and we give them money every month and we also send them material aid. Now, our programs and activities more systematic. We have reached an agreement in some regions and non-governmental organizations that deal with social problem solutions, including the problems of people with disabilities. It’s very important to solve disabled people problems and we are working on different solutions to make their more lives easier.
