A huge floating island, consisting of frozen pumice, has been found on the Pacific, on 1000 km from Owkland (NewZeland),- Nzherald.co.nz reports. The area of the free floating piece is about 26 thousand square km, which is about the size of Belgium.
Pumice stone, from which the floating island consists, is a porous volcanic glass, which is formed by the immediate freezing of acid and medium-acidity lava, in the result of gas excretion.
Tim Oscar, the Lieutenant of New Zeland Naval Forces, said, that this was the most extraordinary thing that he had ever observed during his 18-year service. According to specialists, this huge amount of pumice is the result of the underwater volcanic activities. By the way, the island is not a danger for navigation.
Note that there is a similar formation in the Red Sea. There, again as a result of underwater volcanic activity, one more island has been added to the 10 islands of Zubayr archipelago.
