When receiving higher education, the children of Armenia’s socially disadvantaged families that are included in the Paros subsidy system will receive reimbursements for their education costs.
Pursuant to the Government’s decision reached on Wednesday, this regulation will be put into effect in the country as of January 1, 2013.
The number of university students from the poorest families is six times less than that of the university students from rich families, Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan stated during a briefing with news reporters.
In line with the aforesaid decision, these students will receive a reimbursement totaling 50-70 percent of their tuition fees, depending on the degree of poverty. Close to 1,000 university students are expected to receive such reimbursements as of September 1, 2013, and up to 2,500 in the year 2015.
Even though enrollment in higher education has considerably risen in Armenia in the past decade and reached close to 30 percent, it is still lower than the average European indicator.
