European Parliament MP calls Orban's participation in the summit of Turkic States in Shushi “a shame”
EconomyMember of the European Parliament Natalie Loiseau has criticized Hungarian Prime Minsiter Viktor Orban's participation in the Summit of Turkic States, calling it a “scandal” for Europe.
“Viktor Orban's participation in the Summit of Turkic States, with a representative from Northern Cyprus and in a town in Nagorno-Karabakh, is a shame for Hungary and a scandal for Europe. Does the Hungarian PM Orban question the Cyprus problem?” Loiseau wrote on the social network X.
Earlier Josep Borrell, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, had also issued a statement on the Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s participation at the informal summit of the Organisation of Turkic States on July 5-6, saying it “took place, exclusively, in the framework of the bilateral relations between Hungary and this organisation.”
“Hungary has not received any mandate from the EU Council to advance the relations with the Organisation of Turkic States. The European Union rejects the attempts by the Organisation of Turkic States to legitimise the Turkish Cypriot secessionist entity, the so-called, internationally not recognised, “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus”, as an observer in the Organisation of Turkic States,” the statement reads.
“The EU has made it repeatedly clear, including at highest political level, that the EU recognises only the Republic of Cyprus as a subject of international law, in accordance with the respective UN Security Council Resolutions,” High Representative’s statement adds.
