Conviction rates fall in Uzbekistan in 2012

The number of criminal cases reviewed by courts declined by 9.9 percent in Uzbekistan in 2012 compared to 2011, while the number of administrative law violations fell by 3.1 percent.

The information was presented at the meeting of the Presidium of Uzbek Supreme Court, which considered activity of the general jurisdiction courts in 2012 on Friday, Uzbek national news agency (UzA) reported.

In particular, conviction rate reduced for certain types of crimes, including theft, hooliganism, crimes related to drug trafficking, theft by embezzlement or misappropriation, intentional injury, robbery, burglary and violation of safety rules.

The courts reviewed a total of over 161.000 civil cases in 2012.

Number of court sentences hit over 84.7 percent of the total number of crimes. Over 89.4 per cent of claims were granted and more than 1.9 million court orders were made for recovery of over 658 billion soums.

Over 12,000 people were released from criminal liability as a result of the institute of reconciliation's activity in the past year, while more than 138,000 people were released since the creation of the institution in 2001.
