The French city of Bezons has granted honorary citizenship to Majdi Rimawi, a Palestinian involved in the 2001 killing of Israeli tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi, a local news bulletin says.
“He has been locked up for over ten years. His crime? Defending his city and its inhabitants, demanding the application of international law by reinstating Palestine within its 1967 borders and recognizing East Jerusalem as its capital as stipulated by the UN. For this he was sentenced to life in prison,” the bulletin said.
The Bezons mayor has called it a “strong political decision.”
In 2008, Majdi Rimawi was convicted by Israeli authorities of being a member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He was one of the four Palestinians who assaulted Rehavam Ze’evi outside an Israeli hotel, Interfax reports.
