Science and culture
On Dec. 9, on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated to Hmayak Hakobian’s 140th anniversary, the National Gallery prepared a scientific catalogue including Hakobian’s selected works, which has the album of works presented at the exhibition, the complete list of works preserved in the museum, and the chronology and bibliography of the artist’s life and activity.
Hmayak Hakobian was one of the few distinguished artists of Realism, -towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century (1871, Trabzon-1939, Tiflis) - whose creative, rich heritage had not yet been heightened. The present exhibition is organized to fill that honorable gap.
The artist got professional education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich (1891-1894), lived and worked in Tiflis, traveled to Switzerland and visited Armenia many times. Since 1889 he had participated in the exhibitions organized in Tiflis and Yerevan that included painting and graphic works. His particular preferences reflected many spheres that encompass the fine arts. His paintings consisted of thematic scenes and genre compositions that were mainly devoted to the rich diverse population in Tiflis and portraits of his close friends and family that was distinguished by all their own diverse and individual features. He also depicted cozy landscapes of nature and still lives that were painted with a classical style - enriching Armenian art by new themes and genres, and using art as a means of expression.
