On Tuesday, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner completed a test flight to show that the plane’s new lithium-ion battery system meets regulatory safety standards, CNN reports.
A Boeing spokesman said that the two-hour flight “went according to plan.”
If found successful, the test flight will enable Boeing to go ahead with a second such flight to gather data that will be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to certify the new battery system.
The US Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday approved a proposed remedy for problems that triggered battery fires and led to the grounding of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner, but the company must still demonstrate its approach will ensure safety before those planes can fly again.
The agency said it had signed off on Boeing’s certification plan to redesign the wide body's lithium-ion battery system.
Boeing's newest and most advanced commercial jetliner was grounded in January by regulators worldwide after two battery-related fires damaged 787s in Boston and in Japan. No passengers or crew were hurt in either incident.
