Georgian parliamentary majority and minority fail to reach agreement on "General courts" law
Georgia
The Georgian parliamentary majority and minority failed to reach an agreement on the law "General courts", Georgian Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili said on Thursday.
He acquainted the public with those changes, coordinated by the majority members and said that, of course, this model has been discussed with Prime Minister because a package has been prepared upon the government's initiative.
Usupashvili said that the changes almost entirely correspond to the Venice Commission's conclusion.
"Our model will be presented next week," he said. "The power of 6 of 15 members will be terminated, four of whom were appointed by the Parliament and two, by the president. Chairman of the Supreme Court and another member who meets the criteria set by the new legislation of the rest members will retain power. As for the rest members elected judges, their powers will be suspended, but they will have the opportunity to nominate their candidacy again."
