As a part of his two-day trip to Russia US Secretary of State John Kery is to lay wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, one of Moscow's most reknowned WWII memorials.
Kerry’s visit to Russia comes just two days before the nationwide Victory Day on May 9th which commemorates the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Victory Day is widely perceived to be one of the most important celebrations in Russia, and according to one of the senior officials from the US State Department laying wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier just underneath the Kremlin walls will be a significant symbol of the "more intensified dialogue with the Russians at the highest levels." The official also reports that Kerry and his delegation will not only "honor the veterans" but will also meet a few of them”.
After the wreath-laying ceremony which is to take place on Tuesday's afternoon, Kerry is expected to meet with the Russian President Vladimir Putin. Later in the evening US Secretary of State is also to hold a "full bilateral meeting" with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
